I am amazed that some people have over 52,000 followers on Twitter. I bet 60% of them have no idea who they are following, or care what they have to say. I’ve come across people with hundreds of friends on Facebook, most of whom they probably hide receving updates from. These aren’t relationships, they’re just profile connections, and when the rubber meets the road, it’s highly likely that those connections won’t amount to much.
However, I’ve met and cultivated relationships with a number of people online that I share a mutual interest with and would even call friends. These are the relationships that provide the mentoring, inspiration and insight that add value. Most of them, I’ve met through blogs and forums where real conversation and ideas are exchanged.
I’m not saying that there isn’t a place for Facebook and Twitter in our growing social media environment, but racing to get as many followers as you can, might not be worth much more than the number on your screen.
Here’s a great clip about the value of building authentic relationships through social networking from my favorite marketing guru… Seth Godin. Enjoy.
